My Grand Canyon Rafting Trip August 2000 River Day 4 Wednesday 8/23/2000: (Mile 69.5 - Mile108.2) Departed: We left Camp 3 early – Walt says we’ll "have a longer day on the river because we need to cover some miles today". Waterfall: (Mile 74) Stopped at Escalante Creek and briefly visited the waterfall right beside the river. Rest-Stop: (Mile 87.8) We stopped off at Phantom Ranch (bottom of Bright Angel & Kaibab trail from the rim) for a water refill, bathroom break (real ones!), bagels & wine in the Phantom Ranch Café. Mailed out some “Grand Canyon - Delivered By Mule-train" Postcards from here. To most people who hike down in a few hours to the bottom - Phantom Ranch probably seems rustic - but after 3 1/2 days on the river it seemed like major civilization to us... Lunch: (Mile 93.5) Stopped for lunch just above Granite Rapid – scouted out the Rapids and took some photos by the boulders along the rapids This is Steve & Tary from Houston - the newlyweds - resting on a rock
Camp 4: (Mile 108.2)
We camped for the night on the north shore just upriver of Shinumo Creek in amongst rocky outcroppings.
We went down-river a little by boat to visit Shinumo Creek and the waterfall at the top of the canyon – Fun. Jason lost his watch here and I’d lost my favorite hat somewhere after we returned to our camp by boat. Walt got out his guitar tonight and gave a performance using the boat as his stage.
Mileage: Covered 38.7 miles – no hikes – just the walk to Phantom Ranch Main Photo Page Upriver Downriver
