My Grand Canyon Rafting Trip August 2000 River Day 3 Tuesday 8/22/2000: (Mile 52.4 - Mile 69.5) Hike: (Mile 52.4 - in camp)
Early AM Hike up to the Anasazi Granaries right above camp and above the mouth
of Nankoweap Canyon. Fantastic views straight down the Canyon (Tom leads)
...And yes that's me sat on the rock
Departed: We left Camp 2 at Nankoweap Canyon @ ~8:00am Hike: (Mile 64.6:start - Mile 65.5: end)
Stopped for loop hike up Carbon Creek Canyon past strangely water eroded rock faces like Swiss cheese and right up to the head of the canyon where some weird twisted rock strata folded up almost vertically (at the Butte fault line, site of East Kaibab monocline)
We returned back down Lava Canyon (like a mini “Painted Desert”) and down to the river just above Lava Canyon (Chuar) Rapid (Walt leads) Tom & Eli had moved the boats down river.
Lunch: We had a nice but rather late lunch here before re-launching
Camp 3: (Mile 69.5) Stopped for the night at Basalt Canyon Beach (NW River bank) - 'Indian Dick' lived here ...
Great beach front location. There was an ‘oar’ trip camped across & just upstream running around doing some nude ritual with chanting - very odd... but then they had been on the river twice as long as we had - who knows what's to come for us...? Found out it was Gary Shapiro’s 40th birthday this evening – we had an impromptu birthday party for him on the beach. Gave him one of my precious beers!
Gary Shapiro - 40th birthday boy posting with Indian Dick on Basalt Canyon Beach. There is a canyon story about Indian Dick - but you have to go and ask a boat captain to hear it... Mileage: We didn’t cover much river today - 17.1 miles – due to hours of hiking Main Photo Page Upriver Downriver |
