Master Closet

My first work on the new house was to 'organize' the master closet. This area was a good size at about 10'x12' with double width siding doors and lighting but was only fitted out with basic wooden hanging rails around the perimeter and one painted particle board shelf above. All of the space in the center was just empty & wasted.

I wanted to fit out out fairly cheaply - its a utilitarian area to us - not for show - so we ruled out the expensive closet fitting options and opted to keep most of the existing rails.

We did need lots more long term storage space for suitcases, ski gear etc that was bulky but would be used quite infrequently. We also also wanted lots more shelf/drawer space for regular use.

In the end I created a tall peninsula unit from finished edge particle board in the middle of the room - also serving to partition his and hers space - needless to say her side is bigger!...

This unit is wide enough to have separate deep shelves on both sides and a small hanging area on her side. Rather than construct drawers (complex) I just sized the shelf space to allow plastic storage drawers to be inserted. The top of the peninsula is also used for large item storage. The front of the peninsula is about 24" from the entry doors allowing internal side to side access - it also features a full length mirror that can be used at distance with the doors open.

All the new work is finished and painted to match the existing equipment.

I also added additional deeper high shelf across the full width of the back of the closet to create a platform for suitcases and large storage boxes for ski gear.

All in all a very functional space.
