Kitchen Remodel - Construction Details When you look at the before and after pictures of the remodeling it looks as if most of what we did was to change the countertops & floor, add a few cabinets and expand the island a bit. The underlying details were a bit more extensive.... For starters the original low wall area was completely ripped out and rebuilt to a higher level on one side to allow for two new base cabinets on the other side. These were matched to the old cabinets with a custom built wine rack to bridge the corner space. This area was also wired for Phone, TV, Ethernet Networking plus Audio & Video feeds to the family from AV system. We also added power outlets for appliances, inside the computer cabinet and for the countertop above. Provisions for the Kitchen computer system cabling etc were also added. We completely demolished the Island down to virtually nothing, and rebuilt to quite different dimensions: wider and longer and differently shaped with the complex offset circular end. Two new base cabinets were added for the island. The island was also completely re-plumbed for the new sink & disposal & new water filter installation and for the instant hot/cold systems. It was also rewired for additional power outlets including for the new under-sink appliances. Four of the existing base cabinets in the kitchen were swapped & relocated around the room to allow for better space utilization and to fit the new appliances in. The existing fully tiled floor and fully tiled countertops were removed and replaced including color matched kickboards and backsplashes. The tiled area behind the new backsplashes required complete removal and replacement with clean drywall. Under cabinet lighting was installed beneath each upper cabinet and a color matched light rail was installed to wrap all the cabinet lower edges. Color matched trim strips were also installed around the top edges of all the upper cabinets. Additional track based lighting was installed above the island and 6 pendant fittings installed. Low voltage track lighting was installed above the kitchen/family room divider worktop. New scene lighting controls and remote switches were installed in the kitchen to conveniently control the additional Kitchen lighting Pull-out bins for garbage & recycling were custom built on-site, Base cabinets were adapted for pull- out drawers by the removal of center stiles and reinforcing. Most drawers were adapted with some form of custom dividers & organizers including the sink's pop down drawer fronts. All the drawer & cabinet pulls were replaced with stainless steel handles. All in all it was a huge amount of work - but well worthwhile! Island construction: (note filter system opposite sink unit)
