Entertainment Cabinet Updating:

So after a while I decided that the IKEA electronics cabinet needed dressing up (this was always in the plan). Goals were to add a more decorative top, to make it structurally more sturdy and look more substantial, increase the ventilation flows and to significantly improve the wiring and maintenance aspects.

To start the project I added better connectivity by installing keystone connection plates on the underside of the hutch unit (above the cabinet back panel) for every function: Speakers, Analog Audio in/out, RF in/out, HDMI, Video in/out, remote control in/out, ethernet, optical audio.

I started on the cabinet work by adding more substantial 2.5" side panels wrapped in matching white plastic - which required a new larger and more easily sliding base. This was again wrapped in cut-down baseboards for an integrated look.

I removed the rear panel & created 2 sliding perforated back panels for the  equipment sections and recessed the center back section. The space created by this allows cable races, ethernet hub, RF splitters and power outlets to be located there. All the cabling and connections the hutch unit are made at the left rear corner. This allows the unit to be slid forward and rotated  90 degrees for easy front and rear access while all connections are still made.

End results:
