Philmont Scout Ranch is a property in Northern New Mexico owned by the Boy Scouts of America. It is the home of one of the BSA's HIgh Adventure Bases. 12 man Crews from all over the USA backpack for 14 days treks throughout the summer months. I have been to Philmont twice: once with Alex & once with both Alex & Daniel. Both were quite extraordinary experiences; great scenery, places, activities, and people. For our last trip we experimented with improved gear:
Lightweight Cooking System: Basically a Turkey Bag/Cozy and Jet Boil cooking system - worked extremely well on our last trip - will definitely do this again.
Improved Bear Bagging System: A sky hook and pulley based system to ease raising the extremely heavy and bulky bear bags up to the Philmont bear cables. We did have some issues with some components and needed to revert to a traditional hang
Larger Dining Fly System: We took a 16' x16' caternary style Kelty dining fly and used hiking poles for supports - extremely comfortable when rained out in camp. Definitely would use this again too.
